Young areca is purchased at a high price, what does the management agency recommend?

In Vietnam, areca nut is a favorite food of the elderly, or used for worship and weddings. However, in recent years, the Chinese market often buys areca to process snacks, especially young areca. Currently, the price per kilogram of young areca is paid by traders up to 26,000 VND/kg.

According to gardeners, after buying young areca, people often choose quality fruits (small seeds or no seeds) boiled in boiling water, then dried and packed into bags and transferred to the Chinese market to make candy.

This type of areca candy has a sweet, sweet taste like ginger candy, has the effect of fighting sore throat, keeping the body warm, so it is very popular with Chinese people.

In fact, this is not the first time that young areca is purchased massively by traders. The phenomenon of Chinese traders buying young areca at high prices took place many years ago in the northern and central provinces and the Central Highlands.

Specifically, in September, August 2021, the price of fresh areca in many localities in Pacify, Quang Ngai, … increased rapidly, in many places reaching 50,000 – 60,000 VND/kg. Even 1 quintal of areca can buy 1 gold thread.

In the middle of September 2022, the price of fresh areca rose to more than 40,000 VND/kg. However, in November 2022, the purchase price of fresh areca nut in the market dropped dramatically, ranging from 5,000 – 9,000 VND/kg, even many kiln owners were reluctant to buy.

According to Mr. Nguyen Nhu Cuong, Director of the Department of Crop Production (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), in the early days of 2023, the Chinese market began to increase the purchase of young areca, possibly due to the increased demand for this fruit. but most likely only sudden and temporary, not according to market rules like other export agricultural products.

Therefore, the representative of the Department of Crop Production recommends that people should not be greedy for good prices but grow massively, because this can lead to a crisis of overproduction. According to Mr. Cuong, Chinese traders come to buy areca completely by the unofficial channel.

“The areca tree is not the main crop, the main agricultural product. Vietnam does not have a plan to grow areca, so it is difficult for authorities to manage. Therefore, people need to consider and calculate carefully before planting this plant, because this is also a plant that has a growing period of 3-5 years before it can be harvested … “, Mr. Nguyen As Cuong said.

According to research, the Department of Cultivation does not plan to plant areca because this is not a staple food crop of Vietnam. “The areca tree is not a major crop or agricultural product such as rice, fresh fruits and vegetables, etc., so the domestic demand is very small. This is not a staple crop, so the Department of Crop Production, even the local authorities, do not know exactly how much area there is,” said Mr. Cuong.

Mr. Cuong also cited the consequences that have happened from the massive development that caused prices to fluctuate up and down.

“We have had too many lessons about cutting down this tree, planting that tree when the price is high and not oriented, there is no stable market. Then when they could not sell, there were no buyers, people struggled again. Therefore, people should not be excited when they see the high price of young areca trees increase massively but rush to destroy other trees to plant areca. Because if you destroy this tree and plant that tree, then when traders stop buying it, the authorities can’t intervene because this is a spontaneous action,” said Mr. Cuong.

According to Mr. Cuong, if you want to develop areca trees, the local government must have orientation, must plant in advantageous areas and must invest methodically but do not see the expensive price of areca is grown everywhere. This will lead to the risk of excess crisis. In addition, there must be a contract to purchase from Chinese enterprises, not completely depending on traders and small traders through small quotas.

“The Department does not plan to plant areca, because this is not a staple food crop of Vietnam. Therefore, local authorities need to propagate and mobilize people so that they can understand the impacts of massive planting and development, not according to planning,” added Mr. Cuong.

Also according to Mr. Cuong, the Department of Crop Production has specified a general direction, which focuses on key crops such as coffee, pepper, cashew, durian, wet rice, etc. Regarding crop development, the Department of Crop Production only Practice best technical procedures, guide local seed management, not develop development plan.

In fact, there have been many times when farmers were devastated by planting trees massively following the movement when they saw Chinese traders increasing their purchases. Most recently, at the beginning of 2022, in many western provinces, there was a phenomenon of unseasonal dragon fruit (also known as dragon fruit in a lamp) full of copper when traders suddenly stopped buying. Many small traders also lost their previous deposits, but could not claim compensation from Chinese traders because all deposit transactions were unclear, without specific documents or contracts. body.

Currently, fresh areca fruit is grown in many localities across the country. In the North, Thuy Nguyen district, Hai Phong city is the famous areca granary of the Northern Delta. In the Central – Central Highlands region, areca is grown a lot in Quang Ngai. In the West, areca trees are intercropped by farmers in fruit gardens to make use of excess land.
