Sidewalk-style shrimp paste vermicelli causes a fever in New York

Vietnamese dishes are enjoying increasing popularity and fame among international friends, many dishes such as pho, spring rolls, banh cuon or bun cha… have made it into the world ranking of delicious foods. And recently, a well-known Vietnamese dish caused a stir in New York.

A well-known meal of Vietnamese consisting of vermicelli, beans, some boiled meat, sausage and fried rice, essential is a bowl of shrimp paste and some herbs, which usually sells for VND35,000. But on the other side of the world, the same noodle soup served this way costs as much as 800,000 VND.

The restaurant with the very Vietnamese name “Mam” is modestly located in a small corner of New York City, but is never empty. This is the restaurant ranked 26th among the best restaurants in New York according to the New York Times, with a special noodle dish priced at USD 35, which is VND 800,000. Mam is the work of the couple, Mr Jerald Head and Mrs Nhung Dao.

As a chef, he loves street food in Vietnam, so Mr. Jerald was determined to bring both plastic tables and chairs and Vietnamese-style dinnerware to New York. In addition, he is also very picky about the ingredients for the restaurant’s pasta dish.
