Detecting tetrodotoxins in samples suspected of mistakenly eating sea cucumbers

On February 10, the Institute ocean (Nha Trang City, Khanh Hoa province) has sent a document to Khanh Hoa Provincial Food Safety and Hygiene Sub-Department, about the results of toxicological analysis and some information on the two samples that caused food poisoning for them. 3 people in Ninh Hoa town on February 5.

According to the results of toxicological analysis of the Institute of Oceanography, both samples contained tetrodotoxins with toxicity exceeding the threshold for use.

Because the sample is not intact, identification based on morphology is difficult. However, preliminary results suggest that the sample belongs to the species So Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda. Currently, DNA analysis is in progress.

The Institute of Oceanography also recommends: Sam/so is an archaea species with a slow growth rate. The blood of sea buckthorn can extract endotoxin detectors. Soursop contains toxins mainly tetrodotoxins and may contain small amounts of saxitoxins.

These are neurotoxins, very toxic, with a high mortality rate, and currently there is no special antidote. Patients with poisoning need respiratory support and immediately taken to the medical center for timely care until the toxin is eliminated.

The Institute of Oceanography also recommends banning the use of sam/so as food.

In the afternoon of the same day, information from the Provincial General Hospital Khanh Hoa said that 2 out of 3 patients in the above poisoning case have been discharged from the hospital, while the NVS patient – the most severe patient, is now awake and is continuing to be treated at the Intensive Care Unit – Anti-poison.

As reported, at 21:00 on February 4, the staff and owner of a restaurant (about 10 people) in Ninh Hoa town steamed 2 sea sams to eat. After eating for about 30 minutes, 3 people showed signs of numbness in the tip of the tongue, numbness in the fingers and vomiting.

The owner of the restaurant took these 3 people to Ninh Hoa General Hospital for emergency but the prognosis was severe. After that, Ninh Hoa Regional General Hospital transferred 3 patients to Khanh Hoa Provincial General Hospital.

On the way to the hospital, Mr. NVS stopped breathing, stopped breathing but was treated promptly by the doctors and nurses of Khanh Hoa Provincial General Hospital.
